Total Knee Replacement

Performed by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

Total knee replacement resurfaces the worn knee joint with a durable implant, relieving arthritis pain and restoring comfortable walking. Early motion is emphasized to keep the knee from stiffening.

What the Procedure Involves

  • Removal of the worn joint surfaces
  • Placement of metal and durable plastic components
  • Careful balancing and alignment for smooth motion
  • Weight-bearing begins the same or next day

Who It's For

  • Advanced knee arthritis with pain, stiffness, and deformity
  • Failed non-operative care
  • Reduced walking distance and difficulty with stairs

Recovery & Rehabilitation

Weight-bearing starts immediately with a walker or crutches, and regaining motion early is the priority. Most patients return to comfortable walking and low-impact activity over several weeks to months.
