Overview
Total hip replacement resurfaces the arthritic hip with a durable implant, relieving groin pain and restoring smooth, comfortable walking. Dr. O'Donnell performs the procedure through a posterior approach.
What the Procedure Involves
- Removal of the worn ball and socket
- Placement of a metal and highly durable plastic (or ceramic) implant
- Performed through a posterior approach
- Weight-bearing begins the same or next day
Who It's For
- Advanced hip arthritis with groin pain, stiffness, and a limp
- Failed non-operative care
- Difficulty walking, dressing, or sleeping due to hip pain
Recovery & Rehabilitation
Weight-bearing starts immediately with a walker or crutches, and posterior hip precautions are observed for about 6 weeks. Most patients return to low-impact activity over several weeks to months.
