Tibial Plateau Fracture Fixation (ORIF)

Performed by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

Fixation of a tibial plateau fracture restores the weight-bearing surface of the knee and secures it with plates and screws, an important step to preserve knee function and reduce the risk of later arthritis.

What the Procedure Involves

  • Realignment of the joint surface
  • Plate-and-screw fixation, sometimes with bone graft
  • Early knee motion emphasized to prevent stiffness

Who It's For

  • Displaced fractures of the upper shinbone involving the knee joint
  • Depressed or split joint surfaces
  • Injuries where restoring the surface protects the knee

Recovery & Rehabilitation

Weight-bearing is protected for about 6–12 weeks while the joint heals, with early motion to prevent stiffness. Strengthening and full return follow over several months.
