Shoulder Stabilization (Bankart & Labral Repair)

Performed by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

Shoulder stabilization repairs the torn labrum and capsule that keep the ball centered in the socket, restoring stability after dislocations. A Bankart repair addresses the front (anterior) labrum; posterior repairs address the back of the socket.

What the Procedure Involves

  • Arthroscopic repair of the torn labrum with suture anchors
  • Tightening of the stretched capsule as needed
  • Treatment of anterior (Bankart) or posterior tears
  • A bone-block (Latarjet) procedure is considered when there is significant bone loss

Who It's For

  • Recurrent shoulder dislocations or a feeling the shoulder will slip out
  • A first dislocation in a young athlete
  • Labral tears with instability

Recovery & Rehabilitation

The shoulder is protected in a sling for 4–6 weeks with limits on external rotation to protect the repair, followed by progressive motion and strengthening. Return to contact sport is typically around 6 months.
