Overview
Shoulder replacement resurfaces the worn shoulder joint to relieve arthritis pain. An anatomic replacement recreates the normal ball-and-socket; a reverse replacement switches their positions to let the deltoid power the arm when the rotator cuff is deficient.
What the Procedure Involves
- Removal of the arthritic joint surfaces
- Anatomic replacement for arthritis with an intact rotator cuff
- Reverse replacement for cuff-deficient shoulders or complex fractures
- Inpatient or outpatient depending on the patient
Who It's For
- Advanced shoulder arthritis with pain and stiffness
- Rotator cuff arthropathy (arthritis with a large cuff tear)
- Failed prior treatment or select complex fractures
Recovery & Rehabilitation
A sling is used for 3–4 weeks with early passive motion, progressing to active motion and gentle strengthening. Most patients achieve substantial pain relief, resuming daily activities and low-impact recreation over several months.
