Overview
Repair of a torn quadriceps or patellar tendon restores the extensor mechanism — the structure that straightens the knee — by reattaching the tendon to the kneecap so the leg can support weight and straighten again.
What the Procedure Involves
- Reattachment of the torn tendon to the kneecap with sutures and anchors
- Repair of the quadriceps tendon (above) or patellar tendon (below) the kneecap
- Prompt repair gives the best result
Who It's For
- Complete quadriceps or patellar tendon tears
- Inability to straighten the knee or a leg that gives way
- A kneecap that sits abnormally high or low
Recovery & Rehabilitation
The knee is protected in a brace, often locked in extension for walking, with bending advanced gradually and active straightening introduced over time. Return to full activity is typically 4–6 months.
