Distal Triceps Repair

Performed by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

Distal triceps repair reattaches the torn triceps tendon to the tip of the elbow (olecranon), restoring the ability to straighten and push with the arm.

What the Procedure Involves

  • Reattachment of the triceps tendon to the olecranon with anchors or sutures
  • Performed through an incision at the back of the elbow
  • Outpatient procedure

Who It's For

  • Complete triceps tendon tears
  • Weakness straightening the elbow after injury
  • Active patients and those who push or lift

Recovery & Rehabilitation

A hinged brace limits elbow bending early, with flexion advanced gradually and resisted extension avoided for 6–8 weeks. Return to full activity is typically 4–5 months.
