Clavicle Fracture Fixation (ORIF)

Performed by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

Clavicle fixation realigns a broken collarbone and secures it with a plate and screws, restoring length and alignment so the shoulder regains full strength and motion.

What the Procedure Involves

  • Open reduction (realignment) of the fracture
  • Plate-and-screw fixation along the collarbone
  • Restoration of length and alignment
  • Usually an outpatient procedure

Who It's For

  • Displaced or shortened clavicle fractures
  • Fractures that have broken through the skin or are badly angulated
  • Active patients who benefit from reliable alignment and quicker return

Recovery & Rehabilitation

A sling is used for comfort with early gentle motion, and strengthening begins once healing is confirmed on X-ray. Return to contact sport is typically 3–4 months once the bone has united.
