Overview
Carpal tunnel release relieves pressure on the median nerve at the wrist by dividing the ligament that forms the roof of the carpal tunnel, quickly easing numbness and night-time symptoms.
What the Procedure Involves
- Division of the transverse carpal ligament to enlarge the tunnel
- Open or endoscopic technique through a small incision
- A short outpatient procedure, often under local anesthesia
Who It's For
- Carpal tunnel numbness and weakness that persists despite splinting and injection
- Night symptoms that disrupt sleep
- Signs of nerve changes on testing
Recovery & Rehabilitation
A soft dressing is used with early finger motion; night symptoms often improve quickly. Grip strength returns over a few weeks, and some tenderness at the base of the palm can persist for a while.
