Carpal Tunnel Release

Performed by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

Carpal tunnel release relieves pressure on the median nerve at the wrist by dividing the ligament that forms the roof of the carpal tunnel, quickly easing numbness and night-time symptoms.

What the Procedure Involves

  • Division of the transverse carpal ligament to enlarge the tunnel
  • Open or endoscopic technique through a small incision
  • A short outpatient procedure, often under local anesthesia

Who It's For

  • Carpal tunnel numbness and weakness that persists despite splinting and injection
  • Night symptoms that disrupt sleep
  • Signs of nerve changes on testing

Recovery & Rehabilitation

A soft dressing is used with early finger motion; night symptoms often improve quickly. Grip strength returns over a few weeks, and some tenderness at the base of the palm can persist for a while.
