Overview
ACL reconstruction rebuilds the torn anterior cruciate ligament with a graft, restoring stability for cutting and pivoting sports. Graft choices include a quadriceps tendon autograft, a bone–patellar tendon–bone autograft, or donor (allograft) tissue, selected to fit the patient.
What the Procedure Involves
- Arthroscopic reconstruction using a graft passed through bone tunnels
- Graft options: quadriceps tendon autograft, bone–patellar tendon–bone autograft, or allograft
- Treatment of any associated meniscus or cartilage injury
- Outpatient procedure
Who It's For
- ACL tears with instability or giving-way
- Athletes returning to cutting and pivoting sports
- Combined ligament or meniscus injuries
Recovery & Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation emphasizes early full extension and quadriceps control, then progressive strengthening and a criteria-based return to running and sport, typically 9–12 months. The rehab timeline is tailored to the graft used.
