Overview
AC joint reconstruction restores the normal position of the collarbone after a high-grade separation by rebuilding the coracoclavicular ligaments that hold it down, typically using a graft and fixation.
What the Procedure Involves
- Reconstruction of the coracoclavicular ligaments with a graft and/or fixation
- Restoration of the collarbone to its anatomic position
- Often performed with arthroscopic assistance
Who It's For
- High-grade AC joint separations (Type III–V)
- Persistent pain or deformity after a separation
- Overhead athletes or laborers with a symptomatic separation
Recovery & Rehabilitation
The arm is protected in a sling for about 6 weeks to protect the reconstruction, with motion progressed gradually and strengthening after 12 weeks. Return to contact sport is typically 5–6 months.
