Thumb Arthritis

Diagnosis & treatment by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

Basilar thumb arthritis affects the joint at the base of the thumb, causing pain with pinching and gripping. It is common with age and can make everyday tasks like opening jars difficult.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain at the base of the thumb
  • Weakness with pinch and grip
  • Swelling and a bump at the thumb base
  • Aching after use

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Age-related cartilage wear
  • Prior injury
  • More common in women

Treatment Options

  • Bracing and activity modification
  • Anti-inflammatory measures and injections
  • Joint reconstruction (LRTI) for advanced arthritis

Recovery & What to Expect

Bracing and injections manage many cases for years. When reconstruction is needed, hand therapy restores pinch and grip over several months.
