Tennis / Golfer's Elbow

Diagnosis & treatment by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

Tennis elbow (outer) and golfer's elbow (inner) are overuse conditions in which the tendons attaching to the elbow degenerate, producing pain with gripping and lifting. They are common in racquet-sport athletes and anyone doing repetitive hand and wrist work.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain over the inner or outer elbow
  • Weak, painful grip
  • Pain lifting or twisting
  • Tenderness at the bony prominence

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Repetitive gripping and wrist motion
  • Racquet or throwing sports
  • Occupational overuse
  • Sudden increase in activity

Treatment Options

  • Counterforce bracing and eccentric therapy
  • Activity modification and anti-inflammatories
  • PRP or targeted injection
  • Arthroscopic or open tendon debridement for persistent cases

Recovery & What to Expect

The large majority improve with a structured therapy program over weeks to months. Surgery is reserved for the small number with persistent symptoms.
