Overview
Stingers (or burners) are transient nerve-stretch injuries of the neck and shoulder region, common in contact sports. They cause brief burning pain and weakness that usually resolve quickly.
Common Symptoms
- Burning or stinging down one arm after contact
- Temporary arm weakness
- Numbness or tingling
- Symptoms usually resolving within minutes
Causes & Risk Factors
- A blow that stretches or compresses the nerves
- Contact-sport tackling
- Head-and-shoulder collisions
Treatment Options
- Sideline evaluation and a return-to-play protocol
- Neck and shoulder strengthening
- Protective technique and equipment review
Recovery & What to Expect
Most stingers resolve fully and allow return to play once strength and sensation are normal. Recurrent episodes warrant a more detailed evaluation.
