Stingers / Burners

Diagnosis & treatment by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

Stingers (or burners) are transient nerve-stretch injuries of the neck and shoulder region, common in contact sports. They cause brief burning pain and weakness that usually resolve quickly.

Common Symptoms

  • Burning or stinging down one arm after contact
  • Temporary arm weakness
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Symptoms usually resolving within minutes

Causes & Risk Factors

  • A blow that stretches or compresses the nerves
  • Contact-sport tackling
  • Head-and-shoulder collisions

Treatment Options

  • Sideline evaluation and a return-to-play protocol
  • Neck and shoulder strengthening
  • Protective technique and equipment review

Recovery & What to Expect

Most stingers resolve fully and allow return to play once strength and sensation are normal. Recurrent episodes warrant a more detailed evaluation.
