Overview
Patellofemoral pain syndrome is pain around the front of the knee and kneecap, often called 'runner's knee.' It relates to how the kneecap tracks in its groove and is influenced by hip and quadriceps strength and mechanics. It is very common and typically responds well to targeted rehabilitation.
Common Symptoms
- Aching pain around or behind the kneecap
- Pain with stairs, squatting, or prolonged sitting
- A grinding or clicking sensation
- Pain that worsens with running
Causes & Risk Factors
- Weakness or imbalance of the hip and quadriceps muscles
- Overuse and training errors
- Kneecap alignment and mechanics
- A recent increase in activity
Treatment Options
- Physical therapy focused on hip and quadriceps strength
- Activity modification and load management
- Taping or bracing and movement retraining
- Stretching and gradual return to running
Recovery & What to Expect
The great majority improve with a targeted strengthening program over several weeks to a few months, without the need for surgery.
