Overview
The patellar tendon connects the kneecap to the shin and is essential for straightening the knee. A complete tear, typically in younger, active patients from a forceful jump or landing, disrupts the extensor mechanism and requires surgical repair to restore function.
Common Symptoms
- A pop and sharp pain below the kneecap
- Inability to straighten the knee
- A kneecap that sits abnormally high
- Swelling and a gap below the kneecap
Causes & Risk Factors
- A forceful jump or landing
- A fall onto a bent knee

Treatment Options
- Prompt surgical repair of the tendon to the kneecap
- A protected brace-and-rehabilitation program
- Physical therapy to restore motion and strength
- Gradual return-to-sport progression
