Overview
Patellar instability is recurrent dislocation or slipping of the kneecap, often from ligament injury or underlying alignment issues. It is common in adolescents and young athletes.
Common Symptoms
- The kneecap slipping or dislocating
- Pain and swelling after an episode
- Apprehension with bending
- A feeling of the knee giving way
Causes & Risk Factors
- A twisting injury or direct blow
- Loose or torn stabilizing ligament (MPFL)
- Alignment and anatomy that predispose to dislocation
Treatment Options
- Bracing and a strengthening program
- MPFL reconstruction
- Bony realignment for select cases
Recovery & What to Expect
First-time dislocations may be managed with therapy; recurrent instability is treated surgically, with return to sport typically at 4–6 months.
