Overview
The olecranon is the bony tip of the elbow where the triceps attaches. A fracture, usually from a direct fall onto the elbow, often displaces because the triceps pulls the fragment away, and typically requires fixation to restore the ability to straighten the elbow.
Common Symptoms
- Pain and swelling at the tip of the elbow
- Inability to straighten the elbow against gravity
- A palpable gap at the elbow tip
- Bruising and tenderness
Causes & Risk Factors
- A direct fall onto the elbow
- A direct blow
- High-energy trauma
Treatment Options
- Splinting for rare non-displaced fractures
- Tension-band or plate fixation for displaced fractures
- Early protected motion to prevent stiffness
- Physical therapy to restore motion and strength
Recovery & What to Expect
Fixed fractures begin early protected motion, healing over about 6-12 weeks. Hardware occasionally causes irritation and is sometimes removed later; most patients regain good function with therapy.
