Neck Sprain / Strain

Diagnosis & treatment by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

A cervical sprain or strain is a stretch injury of the muscles and ligaments of the neck, including whiplash-type injuries from a sudden jolt. It causes neck pain and stiffness and typically improves with early, active rehabilitation rather than prolonged rest or collar use.

Common Symptoms

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Reduced neck motion
  • Muscle spasm and tenderness
  • Headache at the base of the skull

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Whiplash from a motor-vehicle or sports collision
  • A sudden awkward movement
  • Poor posture and prolonged static positions

Treatment Options

  • Early active range of motion and posture correction
  • Physical therapy and deep neck-flexor strengthening
  • Heat, ice, and anti-inflammatory measures
  • Activity modification and ergonomic changes

Recovery & What to Expect

Most neck sprains improve over a few weeks with active rehabilitation. Report any arm numbness, weakness, or worsening symptoms, which warrant further evaluation.
