Overview
A cervical sprain or strain is a stretch injury of the muscles and ligaments of the neck, including whiplash-type injuries from a sudden jolt. It causes neck pain and stiffness and typically improves with early, active rehabilitation rather than prolonged rest or collar use.
Common Symptoms
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Reduced neck motion
- Muscle spasm and tenderness
- Headache at the base of the skull
Causes & Risk Factors
- Whiplash from a motor-vehicle or sports collision
- A sudden awkward movement
- Poor posture and prolonged static positions
Treatment Options
- Early active range of motion and posture correction
- Physical therapy and deep neck-flexor strengthening
- Heat, ice, and anti-inflammatory measures
- Activity modification and ergonomic changes
Recovery & What to Expect
Most neck sprains improve over a few weeks with active rehabilitation. Report any arm numbness, weakness, or worsening symptoms, which warrant further evaluation.
