Meniscus Tear

Diagnosis & treatment by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

The menisci are two C-shaped cartilage cushions that absorb load in the knee. A tear — from a twist in younger patients or wear in older ones — causes pain, swelling, and catching.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain along the joint line
  • Swelling after activity
  • Catching or locking
  • Pain with twisting or squatting

Causes & Risk Factors

  • A twisting injury
  • Degenerative wear with age
  • Sports and squatting activities

Treatment Options

  • Physical therapy and activity modification
  • Anti-inflammatory measures
  • Arthroscopic meniscus repair to preserve cartilage
  • Partial meniscectomy when repair is not possible

Recovery & What to Expect

Repair preserves the meniscus and protects the knee long-term, with a longer recovery than trimming. Most patients return to full activity over 3–5 months depending on the procedure.
