Low Back Sprain / Strain

Diagnosis & treatment by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

A lumbar sprain or strain is a stretch injury of the muscles and ligaments of the low back and the most common cause of low-back pain. It usually improves with early activity and core rehabilitation rather than bed rest, which can slow recovery.

Common Symptoms

  • Low-back pain and stiffness
  • Muscle spasm
  • Pain with bending or lifting
  • Difficulty standing up straight

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Lifting, bending, or twisting
  • A sudden awkward movement
  • Deconditioning and poor mechanics

Treatment Options

  • Staying gently active and avoiding bed rest
  • Core stabilization and physical therapy
  • Anti-inflammatory measures and activity modification
  • Body-mechanics and lifting education

Recovery & What to Expect

Most episodes improve within a few weeks with active care and core strengthening. Report any leg numbness, weakness, or bowel or bladder changes immediately, as these need urgent evaluation.
