Knee Arthritis

Diagnosis & treatment by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

Knee arthritis is the progressive loss of cartilage that produces pain, stiffness, swelling, and deformity, limiting walking and activity. Treatment ranges from injections to partial or total replacement.

Common Symptoms

  • Aching pain with activity and at rest
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning
  • Swelling and grinding
  • Reduced walking distance

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Age-related cartilage wear
  • Prior injury or meniscus loss
  • Malalignment (bow-legged or knock-kneed)

Treatment Options

  • Injections, bracing, and weight management
  • Physical therapy
  • Partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement
  • Total knee replacement

Recovery & What to Expect

Non-operative care manages many patients for years. When replacement is needed, a structured rehabilitation program restores comfortable walking over several weeks to months.
