Hip Labral Tear

Diagnosis & treatment by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

The hip labrum is a ring of cartilage that seals and stabilizes the hip socket. A tear causes groin pain, clicking, and catching, often in active adults and frequently associated with impingement.

Common Symptoms

  • Groin or deep-hip pain
  • Clicking, catching, or locking
  • Pain with pivoting or prolonged sitting
  • A sense of instability

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Femoroacetabular impingement
  • Repetitive pivoting or twisting
  • Injury or dysplasia

Treatment Options

  • Physical therapy and activity modification
  • Image-guided injection
  • Arthroscopic labral repair (with treatment of impingement)

Recovery & What to Expect

Therapy helps many patients; when arthroscopic repair is needed it is minimally invasive, with a graduated return to sport over 4–6 months.
