Hip Arthritis

Diagnosis & treatment by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

Hip arthritis is the progressive loss of cartilage in the hip joint, producing groin pain, stiffness, and a limp that limit walking and daily activity. Modern replacement is highly effective when non-operative care is exhausted.

Common Symptoms

  • Groin or buttock pain with walking
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning
  • A limp or reduced walking distance
  • Difficulty with shoes and socks

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Age-related cartilage wear
  • Prior injury or impingement
  • Developmental hip conditions

Treatment Options

  • Injections and activity modification
  • Physical therapy and weight management
  • Total hip replacement (posterior approach)

Recovery & What to Expect

Conservative care manages early arthritis. Total hip replacement offers reliable, long-lasting relief for most patients, with return to low-impact activity over several weeks to months.
