Overview
Greater trochanteric pain syndrome is inflammation and irritation of the tissues on the outer hip, causing pain with side-lying and activity. It is common and usually responds to non-operative care.
Common Symptoms
- Pain over the outer hip
- Pain lying on the affected side
- Discomfort with walking or stairs
- Tenderness over the bony prominence
Causes & Risk Factors
- Repetitive friction of the tendons and bursa
- Gait or alignment issues
- Overuse or a recent activity change
Treatment Options
- Physical therapy and activity modification
- Anti-inflammatory measures
- Corticosteroid injection
- Rarely, endoscopic treatment
Recovery & What to Expect
The great majority improve with therapy and injection over several weeks, without the need for surgery.
