Overview
The triceps tendon attaches the triceps muscle to the tip of the elbow and straightens the arm. Tears are uncommon and usually result from a fall onto an outstretched hand or a forceful load, producing pain, swelling, and weakness with pushing and straightening the elbow.
Common Symptoms
- Pain and swelling at the back of the elbow
- Weakness straightening the arm
- A palpable gap above the elbow tip
- Bruising after the injury
Causes & Risk Factors
- A fall onto an outstretched hand
- A sudden forceful load on the arm
- Weight-lifting or contact sport
- Predisposing conditions in some patients
Treatment Options
- Non-operative care for select partial tears
- Physical therapy for low-demand partial tears
- Surgical repair of the tendon to bone for complete tears
- A protected rehabilitation program
