Distal Triceps Tear

Diagnosis & treatment by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

The triceps tendon attaches the triceps muscle to the tip of the elbow and straightens the arm. Tears are uncommon and usually result from a fall onto an outstretched hand or a forceful load, producing pain, swelling, and weakness with pushing and straightening the elbow.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain and swelling at the back of the elbow
  • Weakness straightening the arm
  • A palpable gap above the elbow tip
  • Bruising after the injury

Causes & Risk Factors

  • A fall onto an outstretched hand
  • A sudden forceful load on the arm
  • Weight-lifting or contact sport
  • Predisposing conditions in some patients

Treatment Options

  • Non-operative care for select partial tears
  • Physical therapy for low-demand partial tears
  • Surgical repair of the tendon to bone for complete tears
  • A protected rehabilitation program

Recovery & What to Expect

Complete tears are repaired to restore strength. A protected rehabilitation program gradually restores motion and strength, with return to full activity over 4-5 months.
