Overview
De Quervain's tenosynovitis is irritation and swelling of the two tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. It causes pain with thumb and wrist movement and is common with repetitive gripping and lifting, classically in new parents lifting an infant.
Common Symptoms
- Pain on the thumb side of the wrist
- Pain with gripping, lifting, or twisting
- Swelling near the base of the thumb
- A catching sensation with thumb motion
Causes & Risk Factors
- Repetitive gripping and lifting
- New-parent lifting
- A recent increase in hand activity
- Sometimes associated with pregnancy
Treatment Options
- A thumb-spica splint and activity modification
- Anti-inflammatory measures
- Corticosteroid injection
- Surgical release of the tendon compartment for persistent cases

Recovery & What to Expect
Many cases resolve with splinting and injection over several weeks. When release is needed, it is a short outpatient procedure with a quick return to activity.
