Ankle Sprain / Instability

Diagnosis & treatment by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

An ankle sprain is a stretch or tear of the outer ankle ligaments, usually from a roll or twist. Repeated sprains can lead to chronic instability that benefits from rehabilitation or, occasionally, surgical repair.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain and swelling after twisting the ankle
  • Bruising
  • A feeling that the ankle gives way
  • Recurrent sprains

Causes & Risk Factors

  • A roll or twist of the ankle
  • Uneven surfaces and sport
  • Prior sprains with incomplete rehab

Treatment Options

  • Bracing and proprioceptive physical therapy
  • Anti-inflammatory measures
  • Arthroscopic ligament repair
  • Ligament reconstruction for chronic instability

Recovery & What to Expect

Most sprains recover with a structured rehabilitation program over weeks. Chronic instability treated surgically returns to sport over several months.
