Overview
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a key stabilizer of the knee, and a tear is the signature pivoting-sport injury. It causes instability and often requires reconstruction to return to cutting and pivoting sports.
Common Symptoms
- A 'pop' at the time of injury
- Rapid knee swelling
- A feeling that the knee gives way
- Difficulty pivoting or cutting
Causes & Risk Factors
- A sudden pivot, cut, or awkward landing
- Direct blow to the knee

Recovery & What to Expect
Reconstruction is arthroscopic; a comprehensive rehabilitation program restores stability, with return to sport typically at 9–12 months.
