Achilles Injury

Diagnosis & treatment by Kevin O'Donnell, MD — Coral Gables, FL

Overview

The Achilles tendon connects the calf to the heel and powers push-off. Injuries range from tendinitis to complete rupture, which typically occurs during a sudden acceleration or jump.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain and stiffness at the back of the heel
  • Swelling along the tendon
  • A sudden 'pop' and weakness with rupture
  • Difficulty pushing off or rising on the toes

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Sudden acceleration or jumping
  • Overuse and tight calves
  • A recent increase in activity

Treatment Options

  • Eccentric loading program and a walking boot
  • Activity modification
  • Minimally invasive Achilles repair for rupture

Recovery & What to Expect

Tendinitis improves with a loading program over weeks to months. Ruptures, treated with repair or a functional protocol, return to activity over several months.
