Overview
The acromioclavicular (AC) joint sits at the top of the shoulder where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade. A sprain or separation is common in contact sports and cycling falls, causing pain and sometimes a visible bump.
Common Symptoms
- Pain and tenderness at the top of the shoulder
- A visible bump over the AC joint
- Pain reaching across the body
- Discomfort lying on the affected side

- A direct fall onto the shoulder
- Contact-sport collisions
- Cycling or skiing crashes
Treatment Options
- Sling immobilization and rehabilitation
- Anti-inflammatory medication or injection
- Surgical reconstruction for high-grade separations

Recovery & What to Expect
Most low-grade separations recover with non-operative care in 4–8 weeks. High-grade injuries may benefit from reconstruction, with return to sport over several months.
